Iliotibial band syndrome is characterized by pain and inflammation on the outside of the knee, where the tibial band (the muscle on the outside of the thigh), becomes tendonous. The result is friction of the femur (thigh bone) as it glides along the patella (knee joint).
Symptoms of iliotibial band syndrome may include a dull ache during running or walking. The pain may temporarily stop after activity is ceased, but may present again with increased intensity when mobility is resumed, especially when running downhill or walking down steps.
